LDDK and BusinessEurope urge EU institutions to act urgently to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and reduce regulatory burden

12. February, 2026

LDDK and BusinessEurope have sent a letter to Prime Minister Evika Siliņa outlining European employers’ key priorities for EU competitiveness in 2026 and calling on EU policymakers to move urgently from political declarations to the implementation of concrete reforms.

"The EU is at an inflection point, and such moments require more than having the right intentions. To meet this moment, the EU must turn its positive ambition on competitiveness into decisive action that makes a real difference for companies on the ground. Europe’s economic strength is the foundation of its prosperity and its position in the world. The EU has all the ingredients it needs to secure a more prosperous future, but it must act before it is too late," said BusinessEurope President Fredrik Persson.

On 5 February, BusinessEurope’s priority document “From Ambition to Delivery – An Urgent Call for Action in 2026” was presented to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The document was prepared following an agreement reached by BusinessEurope’s member federations at the Presidents’ Council meeting in Cyprus.

Despite new initiatives, companies continue to face high energy costs, excessive regulatory burdens, a fragmented Single Market, and insufficient investment.

The document identifies five priority areas requiring urgent action:

  • A deeper Single Market and simplified regulation;
  • Lower energy prices and a decarbonisation-based business model;
  • Reduced geopolitical risks and diversified trade;
  • Investment and innovation;
  • Higher employment and skills aligned with labour market needs.
